Also known as hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone is caused by the unbalanced darkening of the skin. This is due to an overproduction of melanin, which is a natural defence mechanism of the skin against the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

However, this is only one of the many reasons why melanin production occurs. Other factors such as environmental air quality, hormone levels and post-trauma scarring from lesions and injuries can also cause uneven skin tone.

It’s impossible to stop melanin production from happening, but there are many ways to slow down the process. It may get more difficult with age, but prevention is always better than cure.
